A grandmother shares a valuable tip for the Christmas season when grandparents often spoil children with presents, sometimes without the parents’ consent.

DeeDee Moore is a proud grandmother of three grandchildren and the founder of More Than Grand, a website dedicated to fostering good communication between parents and grandparents. Recently, she shared a valuable idea for the Christmas season when grandparents shower their grandchildren with gifts.

In a TikTok post, Moore talked about how the amount of gifts grandparents give to children can be a source of frustration for parents, and that parents may be right if we consider their point of view.

“75% of the parents we interviewed would like grandparents to respect their gift wishes,” she explained, noting that although there are many reasons for this, one of the main reasons parents ask grandparents to limit the number of gifts is the lack of space to store so many toys.

“Let’s say your grandchild has four grandparents and four aunts and uncles. Each of them gives him a gift for his second birthday. That’s already nine gifts, plus something from mom and dad. We’re at ten,” she says.

“If all these grandparents buy three things for him, and two of the aunts give him something extra, that’s 22 presents for a 2-year-old who would be just as happy with a box.”

We can’t deny that kids often enjoy simple things, and it’s us adults who complicate it. That’s why Moore shares an idea that could bring joy and satisfaction to grandparents who love giving gifts.

“While your grandchildren are dealing with the situation of getting too many gifts, many children are in the opposite situation. Take some of the things you’ve bought to organizations that give gifts to less fortunate families.”

Moore’s post sparked an interesting debate, and other suggestions came up in the comments: “My in-laws opened a college fund for my two kids. Instead of things, they put more money into the account. I’m so grateful!” wrote one person.

“The gift of memories. For example, a family trip or a day at a theme park or zoo,” commented another.
